About

My name is Ria Samuel.

Dear fellow students,

It gives me great pleasure to offer my candidacy for the position of President in the upcoming CCLCS Students’ Guild Elections (2025-2026).

Professionally, I have been an educator for over 22 years. I am currently a secondary school English and Communication Studies teacher. However, I received a full-time scholarship from my union, the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association (TTUTA), to pursue a two-year Associate Degree programme in OSHE at CCLCS.

Vision for CCLCS

As a premier tertiary institution, I believe that CCLCS boasts a vibrant, dynamic and powerful student community. It is my hope that the following initiatives and programmes would meaningfully foster student development and empowerment under my leadership, if elected as Guild President:

  • Improvements in Student Engagement and Communication: I intend to create more opportunities (beginning, middle and end of tenure) for students to directly communicate challenges they may be encountering, as well as their thoughts and opinions. This active and timely feedback, in turn, will inform and guide the Guild Executive’s subsequent actions and activities regarding advocacy and improvement.

  • Further Advocacy on Course Marks: Despite the laudable efforts of the previous Guild Executive (2024-2025), further advocacy is needed on the College’s position regarding course marks. Therefore, I propose that the new Guild Executive advocates for students to receive ALL of their scores in a timely manner, and the College needs to provide a public, definitive statement on the provision of scores.

  • Welfare Support: The creation of a “Student Hardship Fund” for students experiencing financial challenges with tuition fees, etc.

  • Revitalization of Campus Activities (online and face-to-face): The creation of clubs, societies and extracurricular activities will enhance campus life and the student experience. In addition, activities such as the Guild Hike, Sip and Paint, Labour Day March, etc. will be continued to encourage social interaction and participation amongst students. A ”Guild Night” will also be proposed every two (2) months at the Guild Hall to allow students to engage in fun, relaxing social engagement within a welcoming space.

  • Opportunities for Student Entrepreneurship and Networking: In the previous Guild Executive, I spearheaded a “Student Entrepreneurs Day”. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to the College not having a face-to-face Orientation Day. However, I intend to ensure that students would be provided the opportunity to showcase their businesses, products and services at an event hosted by the Guild. I will also encourage networking platforms and opportunities amongst alumni and industry professionals.

  • Constitutional Reform: There is great need for fundamental constitutional change where the current Guild constitution (2009) needs to be better aligned with the current evolving needs of the CCLCS student community. Constitutional reform will also improve the efficiency and structure of the Guild. It will also enhance accountability, transparency and representation, which allows for continuity and growth.

Activities

Purple Fabric Folds

CCLCS

As the former PRCO, I would have been involved in the following CCLCS activities:

  • As Editor of the first official Guild newsletter “Inside the Guild”, I spearheaded the creative direction and publication of two (2) issues.

  • I formed the Public Relations, Communications and Marketing (PRCM) Committee where I served as Chairman. The committee worked tirelessly to provide students with timely information on CCLCS-related events and activities, including the “Inside the Guild” newsletter.

  • I spearheaded the “Name it to Win It” newsletter competition.

  • I devised a “Student Entrepreneurs Day” to encourage students to showcase their businesses, products and services.

  • I provided students with timely, creative publications to commemorate public holidays, events and CCLCS-related information.

  • I supported the Education and Research Officer (ERO) in the execution of the Online Debate Competition, as well as her spearheading and successfully advocating for the release of assessment scores.

  • I devised a communication strategy for mitigating issues regarding the Guild WhatsApp chat membership, and collaborated with the Vice President (Day) in its successful execution.

  • I created data collection forms on semester registration issues, and compiled the information to successfully advocate to the College on students’ behalf.

  • I personally advocated for many students experiencing challenges with registration, GATE, Moodle, examinations, etc.

In addition to being PRCO, one of the most fulfilling moments for me at Cipriani was when I represented the College as a member of the CCLCS Debate Team. I had never previously participated in public debating, but I was encouraged and supported by my colleagues and lecturer, Mrs. Janice Johnson-Lorde. In our last competition against the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, I was adjudged “Best Debater”.

Guild Wish List 2026

As a leader, I am a firm believer in feedback. When I saw students' concerns regarding not receiving their course assessment marks, I started to think about the Guild and what more could be done to improve the lives of students at CCLCS. As a result, I decided to create an anonymous survey for students to express what they would like to see from the Guild Executive in its upcoming tenure for 2026. At the end of the day, the Guild Executive is elected to serve YOU, and see about YOUR interests and needs.

If I am elected as President, I intend to provide you with unwavering advocacy and quality representation by listening to YOU and resolving YOUR issues. Therefore, this Google Form would aid in realising the foregoing feat. It would be great to hear from you!

Yours in service,
